Even for those unfamiliar with K-pop, HyunA might prove to be a somewhat familiar face – she was, after all, PSY‘s subway train riding co-star in the viral video for his gargantuan crossover single ‘Gangnam Style’. Her career achievements do not, however, simply begin and end with a one-off dance cameo – she’s a member of the wildly successful girl group 4MINUTE, one half of the boy-girl duo Trouble Maker alongside BEAST member Jang Hyunseung and an entrancing and exciting solo performer, a career arc that she’s becoming increasingly renowned 4 by the MINUTE.
Never one to shy away from controversy, the video for ‘Red’ – the distinctly trap-flavoured first single from her third solo EP A Talk – features all kinds of unfiltered debauchery, including the straddling of a giant banana, the imprisonment of photographers inside a cage and perhaps even a warped nod to Miley Cyrus in the form of a gorilla swinging nonchalantly from a disco ball. There’s even a scene that shares an uncanny resemblance to the ‘a disappointing birthday party’ card from the infamous game Cards Against Humanity, with a crowned Hyuna standing miserably upon her aforementioned giant banana as a miniature riot is incited before her eyes by her guests. It’s an intriguing albeit sometimes uncomfortable visual spectacular.
You can watch the video for ‘Red’ above. HyunA’s EP A Talk was released today in South Korea. Expect it to crop up on the UK iTunes store very soon.
