Scanning the sold-out crowd of Shepherd’s Bush Empire, everyone from all walks of life are stood here, waiting patiently to see pop singer and former X Factor contestant Ella Henderson.
First out is her support act, JP Cooper. He glides through five songs that are tinged with reggae and dub. Possessing vocals which are clear and strong, the acoustics of the venue compliment his style of music, leaving a lasting impression.
After a brief 10 minute break, the volume of the crowd sparks an atmosphere as the band start up. Henderson walks on to the marching beats of second single ‘Glow’, dressed in a black jumpsuit. Her voice is pitch perfect with every note and this carries on for the rest of the 17 songs she performs.
Fan favourites ‘Mirror Man’ and ‘Yours’ get the crowd singing, Henderson portraying a persona of someone much older than her young age of 19 with the mature and emotive voice that she has. Her Sigma and Kygo collaborations are here also. She even incorporates a Jackson 5 medley into the performance of ‘Billie Holiday’. Throughout, she maintains a close relationship with the audience, talking to the them with personality and charm.
Finally she ends with the massive hit ‘Ghost’, where she has everyone participating again before she departs. Everything was on point tonight, from the band to the backing singers to Henderson herself, the stripped back production bringing the focus to her artistry and her voice.
