Eagles of Death Metal from Palm Desert, California is a project between Jesse Hughs and Queens of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme. The band are currently touring Europe although Homme is not with them due to commitments to other bands. Tonight’s show at the Bataclan theatre was a sold out event.

Although the band are reported to have evacuated safely, reports of 100 people being held hostage inside the venue by gunmen. Later reports followed of five explosions in the area. Just before midnight police stormed the building, the siege ended with two dead terror suspects. Reports suggest that a total of 100 people were killed inside the theatre.

The venue was targeted alongside shootings in various other locations including the Lourve, Les Halles shopping centre, and Stade de France where there were reports of two explosions. CNN reported that between six and eight shooters engaged in a fire right with police.

Emegency services including a ‘convoy of ambulances’ arrived at the venue in anticipation of casualties, with military personnel being deployed soon after. At least 40 people are believed to have died across the city, with more injured, during the attacks. President Hollande declared the country to be in a state of emergency, meaning that the country’s borders have been closed.

The event has sparked a whirr over social media, temporarily crashing certain trends on twitter, as the public try and ascertain what is going on in the city. Parisians looking to help those desperately trying to take refuge from the danger used the hashtag #PorteOuverte (which translates to open door) to indicate their willingness to shelter people in their homes. Others tweeted about being stuck in bars and restaurants in the area.

This is the third terror attack in the French capital within twelve months, after the Charlie Hebdo attack, and the attack on a Jewish Supermarket which took place earlier this year.
