Phil Anselmo the former Pantera frontman has come under fire from the metal community after giving a Nazi salute and shouting “white power” at this year’s Dimebash.
In a video uploaded to Youtube, Anselmo was filmed by a fan carrying out the action at the end of the event which took place on January 22; a tribute to Pantera’s late guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Anselmo first claimed that he had been making a joke about white wine, which was served at the event.
After the video had caused an uproar within the metal community, Anselmo released a statement via Housecore Records’ YouTube channel apologising for his actions, saying
“I am a thousand percent apologetic to anyone that took offence to what I said because you should have taken offence to what I said. And I am so sorry, and I hope you just…man, give me another chance to…just give me another chance. I love all of you.”
Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn responded to the initial video criticising Anselmo’s actions, in an 11-minute video. Opening with a statement that: “There was not a Chardonnay or a Pinot Grigio insight backstage.” Later in the video Flynn said “Only in the metal community is something like this so, so brushed off.”
