ARTIST: KENDRICK LAMAR
ALBUM: UNTITLED UNMASTERED
RELEASE DATE: 4 MARCH 2016
Untitled Unmastered is Kendrick Lamar’s surprise release, and potentially his most unique, intriguing project to date. This anonymous artwork and eight significantly titled tracks such as ‘Untitled 01 08.19.2014…,’ signify the date each track was recorded, and demand that you pay close attention. The record as a whole is the key to Kendrick’s transitioning from a young, accessible, radio-friendly rapper to a socio-political, risk taking artist with aspirations of becoming the most influential voice for underprivileged black communities across America. Thinking outside the box is what separates Kendrick from the rest, and this record generously unveils an artist beginning to excel himself.
Untitled… is an album showcasing Kendrick’s USP of being so musically diverse. We’re introduced to Lamar’s newly found jazz, funk and neo-soul influences, alongside his ability for pulling a beautifully dark hip hop track like ‘Levitate’ out of the bag. “Shut your fuckin’ mouth and get some cash you bitch” … these two sides of the spectrum make up the musical core of To Pimp A Butterfly. Certain tracks will have you break a sweat; either from the raw, hard hitting beats reminiscent of something from Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, CeeLo Green’s surprising guest vocal or from the prophetic poetry alone.
